White ravens in the Rhön: students from biosphere schools meet international bestselling author

The "White Ravens Festival for International Children's and Youth Literature" is organized by the International Youth Library under the patronage of the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Arts. The preparation and monitoring of the event was carried out by the environmental education team from the Biosphere Information Center „Haus der Langen Rhön“ and the Nature Experience Center „Naturerlebniszentrum (NEZ) Rhön“.

At the beginning of her author reading, M. G. Leonard vividly explained how she works on her stories. How is a book created? How does the author develop the storyline, the characters and the location? In 2016, the British author landed an international bestseller with her debut, "Bug Buddies" which was published in 35 countries. Because of that success she got her position of vice president of the insect charity Buglife. The two subsequent volumes of the Bug Trilogy as well as her six-part book series "Adventures on Trains" have also won numerous awards and been translated into numerous languages. M. G. Leonard writes for the young and the young at heart who love animals and nature. In 2021, she published "The Secrets of Birdwood", an exciting adventure and crime series about birds, courage and friendship.

The first reading took place on Ostheim's "Tanzberg". Three school classes of the Dr. Alfred Hauser School had set up benches and a small stage for the author under an old linden tree. The moderator of the event, Claudia Söffner from the International Youth Library in Munich, translated the author's descriptions from English. A passage of the book was read by the author in the original text before being read aloud in German translation by sixth-grader Nina Trögel. After the reading, the students built a bird bath for their school grounds under the guidance of ranger Martina Faber.
The reading for Jack-Steinberger-Gymnasium in Bad Kissingen also took place outdoors. The seventh grade classes were gathered in the nearby park. The entire reading was held in English. Numerous questions after both events showed that the author had aroused the students' interest.
